Most Pillows Do Not Offer Neck Support

To get neck pain relief the goal is to be sleeping in alignment.  Most of us realize from the front, a spine should be nice and straight but from the side it should have three six degree curves.  Those curvatures act as a shock absorber.   It’s important to support those curvatures.  The main way to accomplish this is to sleep on our backs and place a contour pillow under our neck.  The contour pillow is important because if you roll to your side, you will still have support.  You do not need head support, just neck support.  Most people use head support pillows and no neck support.  Well, it is time to switch things up a bit to give your neck that support it has been craving for.

First, we are going to take the pillows that have been used to provide head support and we are going to put them under your knees.  Than the neck support pillow will be the new neck support. When you place the pillow under your knees it brings the pelvic girdle back up and now the lumbar has support.

Listen Up Side Sleepers!

neck pain and sleepingIf it is hard for you to sleep on your back then rollover to your side but be sure to place a pillow in between your knees and of course the neck pillow will continue to give you the support your neck needs while sleeping.

The position that is strongly discouraged is sleeping on your stomach.  When you sleep on your stomach you must turn your neck to breath and in doing so, you lose all your proper curvature. When you do not have the proper curvature in your spine, this causes sleep deprivation but it also causes problems to your entire system.  It is important to keep the six degree curve in the neck at all times so you get a better night’s sleep but it will also help prevent snoring.
