There are several methods of sciatica home treatment that that can provide substantial sciatic nerve pain relief. In fact, depending on the exact cause of the sciatic nerve pain, often doctors recommend various ways to treat sciatica at home. Of course, the first thing to do if you are experiencing sciatic pain frequently is to have the cause determined by your doctor; you should be sure there isn’t any reasons like sciatic nerve injury, pinched sciatic nerve or any other sciatic nerve problems. You should allow your doctor to make the proper diagnosis so they can offer you the appropriate sciatic treatment options. However, don’t be surprised if part of the doctor’s suggestions for treatment includes sciatica home treatment.

Even if your doctor prescribes pain killing medications to provide sciatic pain relief, sciatica home treatment may also be expected by your doctor. The reason for this is that the pain relievers alone do nothing to help prevent pain from coming back. Sciatica home treatment is sometimes used in conjunction with prescriptions to allow the body, in particular, the spine, to get back into a normal position which will relieve compression on the sciatic nerve that is causing the pain. Yet many times, when there are no serious causes of your sciatic nerve pain, the doctor will simply suggest sciatica home treatment.

Some suggestions for sciatica home treatment include:
  • Heat or ice therapy. Ice should be placed on the area of pain for 48-72 hours; if the pain persists, switch to using heat on the area of pain.
  • Over-the-counter medications like AdvilT, Motrin IBT, and even store brand ibuprofen or acetaminophen can be used for sciatic nerve pain relief.
  • Positional sleeping. There are two positions recommended for sleeping that can help relieve sciatica pain. The first is to lie on your side, in a fetal position (curled on your side) with a pillow between your legs. The second sleeping position that helps relieve sciatic nerve pain is to lay on your back with a pillow under your knees (small bolster pillows work good for this).

If your doctor feels confident that you can treat your sciatica at home, you may also want to think about learning yoga for sciatica or learning the proper way to do a sciatic nerve stretch. Yoga for sciatic nerve pain is effective for many people. A sciatica stretch or two to help relieve sciatic leg pain and sciatic back pain, combined with other appropriate exercise might also be beneficial to you. Make sure you consult a doctor prior to trying any sciatica home treatment.
