Even after performing a battery of tests your doctor may not find the exact cause of your sciatica. This isn’t always easy for a person to accept after spending hundreds and sometimes thousands of dollars on specialized tests to find out what causes sciatica that they experience. The truth of the matter is that there is not always a visible reason to attribute the sciatic nerve pain and other symptoms to.

Still, the lack of any specific physical findings that are causing the sciatica is actually good news. The cure for sciatica that doesn’t have any apparent correlated physical cause that is visible on tests is usually self-care. Sciatica home treatment is generally all that is needed for these mysterious bouts of sciatic nerve pain.

When all the tests come back normal, one is left to guess what could be causing the sciatica. Perhaps the individual slept in a bad position or sat in a certain position too long and somehow compressed the sciatic nerve. Yet these are simply guesses. The sciatic nerve remedy in this type of case is generally over-the-counter pain killers and cold therapy (applications of ice packs over the affected area). If the cold therapy doesn’t provide sciatic nerve pain relief after a few days, a person can switch to using heat therapy with a heating pad.
